The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute is excited to announce the 2nd annual Child Passenger Safety Week is June 17 to 23, 2012. This week is dedicated to the safe travel of children in motor vehicles. As many as 10,000 children are killed or injured in traffic collisions in Canada every year. It is estimated that proper installation and use of child restraints can prevent more than 70% of these injuries and 90% of these deaths. Unfortunately, not all car seats are installed correctly. Of the car seats checked by technicians in Saskatchewan in a recent study, 81.4% were improperly installed by caregivers.

The good news is that there are almost 200 trained Child Restraint System Technicians in the Province who can provide education to parents and caregivers about how to best protect children in vehicles. There will be car seat safety events occurring in many communities across the province during this week. To find a car seat clinic or a technician in your area, please go to the clinic or technician locator on the SGI website at sgi.sk.ca.

The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute would like to take this opportunity to encourage support for the safe travel of every child, on every vehicle ride. The Saskatchewan Prevention Institute, a provincial, non-profit organization has been working since 1980 to raise awareness and educate others about the prevention of disabling conditions in children.
