Over the summer, the City of Weyburn is implementing new recreational and school traffic zones within the community. These adjustments address upcoming closures and opening of local elementary schools, as well as emphasize safety at busy city parks.
“Safety of our children and students is top of mind and recent improvements to the Traffic Bylaw will help protect our community’s most vulnerable at high traffic areas,” said Police Chief Jamie Blunden.
Important changes to the City of Weyburn Traffic Bylaw were passed at the June 28 City Council meeting. Council welcomed and approved the following recommendations proposed by the City Engineering department and Weyburn Police Service:
• Changes to hours of school speed limits: The speed limit in any school zone is 30 km/hour between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.
• Designated recreational areas: The speed limit in the following designated recreational areas is 30 km/hour between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.:
o Douglas Road (McLelland St. to 13th St.) – Jubilee Park
o Douglas Road (Birch Dr. to Duke St./Zabel Bay to Elm Cres.) – Elks Park
o Coteau Avenue (12th St. to 14th St.) – Don Mitchell Park
o Confederation Drive (6th Ave. SE to 4th Ave. SE) – River Park
Signs will be removed from the former Souris School traffic zone. New signs will be placed in the Legacy Park Elementary School zone on Fifth Street and Douglas Road. Signs will remain in the Haig School area for the Don Mitchell Park designated recreational area on Coteau Avenue.
The City will make changes to signage throughout the summer in preparation for the new school year this fall.
