The Weyburn Police Service has received a few calls this week in regards to missing cats. It appears a number of cats have gone missing from within the city when left outside overnight. Currently there is no evidence to suggest these missing cats are a result of criminal activity. It is believed these missing cats could be attributed to a coyote's nocturnal activity after one was observed near the outskirts of the city limits. Coyotes typically try to avoid human interaction and are not considered a threat to the people living in the area. But, as they are wild animals if you spot a coyote please contact either the Weyburn Police Service or the local SERM office.
Members of the Weyburn Police Service, while on patrol at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday, observed a garbage dumpster on fire near a downtown hotel. The Weyburn Fire Department attended and extinguished the blaze. The matter remains under investigation.
Police received a report of a mischief when a window at the Weyburn Youth Center was broken on Aug. 20. There were a number of youth in the area at the time of the offence and the investigation continues into this incident.
As a result of an ongoing investigation into a stolen vehicle complaint from earlier this month, a 32-year-old Weyburn man was arrested and charged with theft of auto. He was released from custody and will be making his first court appearance in September.
Police attended to a residence in the 400 block of Third Street SE after receiving a call that a Humane Society worker had been bit by a dog while they were investigating a complaint of a neglected animal. The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
Police received a shoplifting complaint on Aug. 21 after witnesses observed a male and female leave a northwest business with electronics. The suspects left the scene in a SUV, black in color with a broken side window. Police continue to investigate this matter.
Police then received a complaint of a shoplifting from a northwest business on Thursday after a male and a female were observed taking electronics and clothes and not paying. The suspects fled the store in a black van. It is believed this incident is related to an earlier incident which had occurred on Aug. 21. The matter remains under investigation.
City police received a call of a hit-and-run in the 100 Block of Sixth Street on Aug. 22. A vehicle had hit a parked vehicle, which in turn had been pushed into another two vehicles. The suspect vehicle had then fled the scene. Police continue to investigate this incident and are looking to identify the driver of a GM truck with some type of push pads on the bumper.
Police received a complaint of a mischief from a northwest motel on Friday. The complainant advised police a number of air conditioner units were damaged sometime over the past week. The matter remains under investigation.
City police received a complaint of a mischief after a number of windows were broken out of a residence in the southwest area of the city on Saturday. Police continue to investigate this incident.
Police attended to the 1100 Block of Hartney Avenue on Saturday morning after receiving a report of a theft from a parked truck after a toolbox had been seen to have been opened. A search of the area by police found a few items which were returned to the owner. Police continue to investigate the matter.
Police received a call of a hit-and-run after a vehicle was observed to have hit a parked car in the southeast area of the city on Sunday, and the female driver got out and fled on foot. Police attended to the area and located a 37-year-old woman who was arrested and was later charged with impaired driving, driving a motor vehicle while over .08, and failing to remain at the scene of an accident, and will be making her first court appearance in September. Damage was minor and there were no injuries.
Police attended to a fight in progress at a downtown bar early on Sunday morning. The combatants were separated and one was escorted to his residence. No charges were laid.
On Aug. 22 and 23, in conjunction with an SGI-sponsored province-wide intersection safety blitz, members of the Weyburn Police Service conducted a number of traffic initiatives at different intersections. The enforcement focused on red light and seat belt infractions as well as speeding. A total of 15 traffic tickets were issued over these two days, as well, a number of warnings were given out. These warnings included the use of engine retarder brakes within the city limits. Truck drivers and trucking companies are reminded that it is illegal to use engine retarder brakes within the city.
