City police investigating fraud, theft and abduction

During this past week, there were 97 calls to the Weyburn Police Service, including fraud, motor vehicle accidents and theft, with many calls alcohol-related.

In conjunction with the Regina Prosecutions office, the Weyburn Police Service has concluded a 13-month investigation regarding an internal business theft with the laying of charges.

A 54-year-old woman from the White Bear Lake area was charged with one count of theft over $5,000 and one count of fraud over $5,000 relating to the theft of money from her former business partner. Although the thefts were noticed in April of 2010, the allegation dates back to 2005 and covers all the years including 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and the first part of 2010. She will be making her first court appearance in February.

Police Service members were called to assist RCMP members with a possible abduction that occurred outside of Weyburn on Feb. 2. Two individuals were later arrested by Weyburn RCMP.

Police were called to a local hotel to investigate a theft from a room on Feb. 4, in which a fridge and towels were reported missing. The matter is under investigation.

City police were called to a minor motor vehicle accident on Second Street on Feb. 1, where one vehicle struck a post. Damage was minor and there were no injuries.

Police were called on Feb. 4 to investigate an accident on King Street that had actually occurred on Jan. 21st, in which there was one minor injury reported. Road conditions were a factor.

As a result of a traffic stop on Saturday, two males one from Weyburn and one from Lang were arrested and charged with possessing a small amount of marijuana. One other local male was arrested on outstanding warrants. All three will make initial court appearances in February.

Residents are reminded that with recent heavy snowfalls, vehicles are not to be parked on city streets for any period over 48 hours; also city crews will post street maintenance warnings and residents are to remove their vehicles when these postings are made.

Police were called on Jan. 31 to investigate a minor assault, and the matter was mediated.

Police were called to investigate a report of harassing text messages. The matter was resolved without further incident.

Police were called to a local bar to remove an intoxicated female who was refusing to leave. She left with police and was taken to a relative's.

Police were called to a local hotel on Feb. 4 to deal with a female who was asked to leave. The matter was resolved without incident.

Several traffic tickets have again been issued for using an electronic device (such as a Blackberry or cell phone) while driving; residents are reminded of this prohibition.
