Dozens of car enthusiasts attended the 6th Annual Moose Mountain Cruisin' event over the May long weekend in Carlyle and Manor.
Moose Mountain Cruisin' started off at the campgrounds in Manor on Friday night with a welcome party for the arrival of the drivers and a wiener roast that lasted until 11 pm. On Saturday, after socializing at breakfast and lunch, the cruisers made their way to Redvers at Redvers Generators to view steamers and other cars at that location. Tom Woodhouse, organizer of Moose Mountain Cruisin' said although they are interested in automotive things their visit to Redvers Generators was relevant because it's mechanical and still ties in with their theme.
"We had a real good visit there for quite some time; it was just nice see what was going on and see the equipment and Darwin's enthusiasm for steam equipment.," Woodhouse said.
The final phase of the day was spent at the drive in at Prairie Dog Drive-In just north of Carlyle. The highlight of the weekend however was the Show N' Shine that was held in the parking lot at A&W in Carlyle on Sunday, May 17. More than 45 classic cars from around Saskatchewan were on show and many people were in amazement of their condition and visual appeal. Woodhouse said they had a very good turn out and there were at least two people with each car.
"We had a really nice day for the show and shine actually, it was a little windy but it still was a great day compared to what we've had some years," he said.
In addition to the appeal of cars Moose Mountain Cruisin' provided a variety of activities that kept people entertained. Classic car owners could be seen cruising along hwy 9 and games and other activities were held in Manor. One couple from Weyburn shared their delight in attending the event.
"This is just great, my wife and I come every year and we love it. It not only a time for us to check out the cars we love but its great family time and an opportunity to hang out with friends too," the Weyburn man said.
The Show 'n Shine was followed by an evening supper for all the participants. On Monday the National Association of Automobile Clubs of Canada (NAACC) awards were handed out. The NAACC is federally chartered association for promoting hobbies and organizations that focus on automobiles.
Garnet Goud won the NAACC Director's Choice Awrad for his 1965 Pontiac GTO while Kurt Nistor took the NAACC "Exemplifying the Hobby' Award for his 1969 Camaro Pro Street. Darwin and Gwen Taylor won the Participant's Choice Award for their 1968 Camaro RS and Tim Whitrow's 1968 Corvette tied with Ernie Tarr's 1971 Olds 442 for the People's Choice Award. The event was sponsored by the Estevan Antique Auto Club, Remax at Estevan, A&W Carlyle, Southern Plains Co-op, Affinity Credit Union and the Prairie Dog Drive-in.
