The Pre-Health Professions Club was in Weyburn on March 11 to promote the field of health care to students. The Club hosted a session that was to include 62 Grade 11 students from 10 high schools in the South East Cornerstone School Division however, due to the weather several out-of-town students were unable to attend.

The first of three sessions provided students with an opportunity to explore and experience the professions of medicine, nursing, physical therapy, pharmacy and nutrition within the health care setting. Students also learned about program requirements, bursaries and scholarships from post-secondary institutions and heard presentations from practicing professionals in the Sun Country Health Region.

Students will complete second and third sessions in the fall of their graduating year and experience an eight-hour mentorship experience within a workplace setting. The goal of the mentorship experience is to assist students in further career research by providing them with an observational experience of the work of a physician, nurse, physical therapist, pharmacist or nutritionist so they can make an informed decision about a career pathway following graduation.

The Pre-Health Professions Club is a University of Saskatchewan partnership that engages the resources of post-secondary institutions, school divisions, First Nations and Métis communities, health regions and practicing health care professionals to provide learning opportunities within the health sector beyond the classroom and into a realistic setting. This is the fourth year that the Pre-Health Professions Club has been in operation.
