The Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop has broke ground and work has begun at their new location of 1800 Ebel Road.
"I am extremely happy to be able to announce that work has officially begun at 1800 Ebel Road on the first phase of our new buildings", said Andria Brady, Executive Director of the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp.
The official announcement was shared with program participants and their families today at the agency's annual Christmas Luncheon.
Earlier last week, DSI Contracting of Weyburn began the preliminary site work and the foundation is in progress for the two warehouses.
When these warehouses are completed, they will house the SARCAN Recycling Depot and the Vocational Training Centre at a combined size will be 11,000 square feet.
The brand new, fully modern SARCAN Recycling Depot will be more than twice the size of the current space designed to incorporate enhanced customer service lanes, enhanced material handling capabilities, and improved staff facilities.
The new Vocational Training Centre will house the agency's Woodshop along with the Paper & Cardboard recycling operations; providing employment opportunities for those with intellectual disabilities, and supplying products and services to Weyburn and SE Sask.
The current building is a large warehouse attached to SARCAN. Inside, one wall of the warehouse currently is a holding tank for their paper and cardboard recycling and the other wall opens up to the day program facility. It's divided into several small rooms with a wood shop at the far end.
"We decided this building wasn't conducive to our needs. It's not the right space," said Brady.
The Wor Kin Shop raised $500,000 to the capital costs through fundraising and two large anonymous donations to add to the Government of Saskatchewan's $1 million in capital funding for the new facility.
"Our new day program facility will make such a positive difference in the lives of our clients," said Brady.
