A regular meeting of the Weyburn City Council was held on April 26; here are the main points of interest:

Flood Planning

Weyburn has so far been luckier than other Saskatchewan cities when it comes to flooding but high water levels are still a concern for many. The City has applied for funding from the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program to provide support for Weyburn residents suffering water damage. Provincial officials will need to assess whether the situation in this area qualifies as a disaster area. In the meantime, City Council recommends that residents experiencing basement seepage or other water problems keep pictures and videos of the problem and retain all invoices for related repairs in case they qualify for future disaster funding.

New Soccer Field

Just in time for summer fun, City Council has expanded Weyburn's outdoor recreation facilities. In response to a request from the Weyburn Soccer Association, Council gave approval for a new youth soccer field to be set up at Elks Park. Although a new permanent soccer field is being built at Jubilee Park, overwhelming demand for under-10 and under-12 soccer made it necessary for the Soccer Association to request expanded space for the current season.

Bloomin' Good News

With warmer temperatures finally here, Weyburn's Communities in Bloom committee is getting ready to "spring" into action. The committee reported to City Council that residents and businesses will soon be receiving information on what they can do to help make Weyburn more beautiful than ever over the coming months. Special thanks are due to Canadian Tire for donating soil and flowers and to the Weyburn Horticultural Society who will be donating flowers left-over from their upcoming spring sale.
