EDITORIAL: Local region has much to offer

Don't believe it when you hear someone complain that there isn't anything to do or see in Weyburn over the summer. There is plenty to see and do, not the least of which is Weyburn's annual Wheat Festival, to be held over the Aug. 5-7 weekend.

Don't believe it when you hear someone complain that there isn't anything to do or see in Weyburn over the summer.

There is plenty to see and do, not the least of which is Weyburn's annual Wheat Festival, to be held over the Aug. 5-7 weekend.

There is a large variety of interesting events, ranging from the annual Horticulture Show to the professional rodeo, Heritage Day at the Heritage Village where the homes and displays will be open for viewing, to the bread-baking contest at the Soo Line Museum and the summer theatre performances at the Tommy Douglas Centre for the Performing Arts, which will be staging "The Fantasticks", the longest-running Broadway show, which will be put on by a local cast.

Aside from this annual city-wide event, there are sites to visit, such as the Soo Line Historical Museum, which is worthy of a visit on its own , plus the Charlie Wilson Silver Collection, the world's largest private collection of silver.

Then, within an hour's drive of Weyburn or so, there is any variety of things to do and see. Many of the towns in the area have their own museums and villages, such as Midale, Stoughton and Ogema, plus at Pangman they will be celebrating their centennial over the Aug. 12-14 weekend with many activities and events.

If one ventures past Ogema out to Bengough, Coronach and Big Beaver, there are the Coteau Missouri badlands to visit; in the opposite direction, there is Carlyle and White Bear Lake, the beach and casino and Moose Mountain Provincial Park; there is the Motherwell residence at Cannington.

If fishing is your sport, there are numerous opportunities to throw out a line in the rivers of the southeast, not to mention in Nickle Lake, and the Rafferty, Alameda and Boundary dams, and various smaller dams (such as at Radville) that are supposed to be good for fish too.

There are a number of regional parks, including Nickle Lake, Ceylon, Radville, Mainprize (Midale) and Oungre Memorial parks, and if you enjoy walking, or biking, through urban parks, there is Weyburn's Tatagwa Parkway, extending from the South Hill area up to the Souris Valley area.

Taken altogether, the Weyburn and southeast area has much to offer to people who want to enjoy their summer and the great outdoors - and there's no room for boredom.
