Firearm, machete seized after assault; Swift Current man charged

Charges include sexual assault and pointing a firearm.

SWIFT CURRENT — Derek Ruest, 34, of Swift Current has been charged after a woman was assaulted and allegedly threatened with a firearm and a machete.

According to RCMP, the Swift Current municipal detachment received a report of an assault at an apartment on Robert Street East in the city Dec. 28, 2022, at approximately 11:45 p.m.

RCMP say their investigation determined an adult male assaulted an adult female, who was able to leave the apartment building, but was then approached by the male and threatened with a firearm and machete. He returned to the apartment and she was able to contact police for assistance.

The female reported injuries described as non-life-threatening and was taken to hospital for assessment, say RCMP.

Swift Current Municipal RCMP officers, with the assistance of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Critical Incident Response Team, arrested Ruest without incident at the apartment on Dec. 29.

A search warrant was then executed at the apartment and officers located and seized an imitation firearm, a machete and a small amount of suspected fentanyl.

As a result of investigation, Ruest is charged with:

  • assault;
  • sexual assault;
  • weapons possession contrary to order;
  • possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose;
  • overcoming resistance to the commission of an indictable offence;
  • pointing a firearm;
  • unauthorized possession of a firearm/prohibited weapon; and
  • trafficking.
