Local fisherman, Rev. Ross McMurtry has won the 2012 Fisherman of the Year award from the Pine Island Resort.

"I enjoy the water, I enjoy the landscape, I enjoy the boating and of course the fishing," said McMurtry. He noted that he started fishing as a boy with his dad, and continued to be interested in the sport.

McMurtry remembers first going up to Pine Island Resort with Weyburn locals Cecil and Ron Barber, a father-son fishing team. Recently, McMurtry has spent time fishing with his family. "They always take the time to spend time with me at the fishing camp."

Pine Island Resort is one of the top fly-in fishing destinations in Canada, located in northern Saskatchewan. It is located on Black Bear Island Lake, which is a widening of the famous Churchill River.

McMurtry has fished in northern Saskatchewan for the past 50 years, and in fact he was Garry Thompson's very first client.

According to the Pine Island Resort profile on McMurtry, he is their "most senior fisherman" at age 85.

"He brightens and enlightens everyone's day from the moment his float plane lands until he reluctantly waves goodbye."

The award detailed that McMurtry's "knowledge of fishing and his ability is second only to his quick sense of humour. Each year Ross brings up as many family members as he can gather up and it's not a difficult task."

Lots of walleyes and big trophy pike are the main attraction of the Pine Island Resort. But there are many other attractions, such as scenic sites like waterfalls, aboriginal pictographs, a veteran's monument and bountiful wildlife including moose, bald eagles, bears, lynx, otters, beavers and much more.
