Alameda's 35th Annual Flower Show and Tea was a great success once again. Hosted by the Flower Show Committee, which is a sub-committee of the Alameda Agriculture Society. This beautiful event was held on Sunday, Aug. 12, in the Alameda School Auditorium.
Entries were accepted the day before as well as Sunday morning. Judging then took place at 10 a.m. finishing by noon. This year the judges of the competition were Rose Owens of Estevan who judged the Specials category and Vicky Dewar of Oxbow who judged both the Cut Flowers and the House Plants.
Between 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. there was a steady flow of people through the gymnasium doors. There were over one hundred people who attended throughout the day enjoying the beautiful displays.
"Every year you don't know what you're going to get, a lot depends on the weather. It's hailed and been very windy I think it's been a success though," Melissa Gervais, President of the Flower Show Committee, explained as to why the number of entrants may have been slightly down this year.
Overall there were a total of nine exhibitors for the 35th anniversary of the event, with a grand total of 268 exhibits entered. The number of exhibits also down by some this year, but it was still a large draw to the area and those who entered had beautiful arrangements able to capture the eyes of all who attended.
There were a total of 24 subcategories of houseplants to enter into including Begonia's, Jade plants, and even cactus. With a total of 59 cut flower subcategories ranging from lilies to roses and dahlias. Finally there were 72 subcategories under Specials including Odds and Ends, Graduation, Fun in the Sun, Summer Medley, Hanging Around, and even Rider Pride.
A very special one this year included the subcategory of 35th Anniversary Special, which was a composition of flowers celebrating the flower show using the colours Jade and Coral with ornamental material permitted.
Prizes and trophies were awarded at 7 p.m. for the great variety of flowers. There were small cash rewards that could be won, door prizes, a raffle draw, and awards given out for the best display of the show overall.
Throughout the day people also enjoyed the wonderful tea and dainties prepared by the Flower Show Committee.
It was a beautiful showing, which any person who enjoys growing and arranging flowers would enjoy.
Supported by the surrounding community there are a great number of sponsors who helped to make the day possible and are appreciated by the committee.
