Four-way returns at First Avenue and 16th Street

The intersection of First Avenue and 16th Street will become a four-way stop on Thursday, July 28.

The intersection of First Avenue and 16th Street will become a four-way stop on Thursday, July 28. The intersection was a four-way stop for a short period last fall, but wasn't successful according to Rene Richard, director of engineering for the City of Weyburn.

"It was a disaster. People (on First Avenue) were blowing through the intersection, so we took it down," said Richard. "We proposed putting flashing red lights on top of the stop signs at that intersection, and it went to tender over the winter. The electrician has the signs ready, so now it's just a matter of getting them up."

The flashing red lights were added to the stop signs in an effort to effectively grab the attention of drivers. Richard hopes that this time the four-way stop will actually get people on First Avenue to stop. If not, Richard says that the police will be ready to give out tickets to drivers not stopping at the intersection.

There was a detour near the junction of Highway 39 and Highway 18 increased volume of traffic through the intersection at First Avenue and 16th Street. The detour was scheduled to be removed on Tuesday. With the newly lightened traffic load, city officials believe now is a good time to introduce the new four-way stop.

There are also plans to install traffic lights at the intersection of Government Road and Railway Avenue this fall, but plans are currently behind schedule. If the lights are not up by fall, they will be installed in 2012.

A few other intersections throughout the city will be receiving new stop signs and have their lines repainted before winter comes.
