Beginning January 24, a free legal clinic will open its doors twice per month on Friday afternoons.
The clinic will be based out of the Canadian Mental Health Association building at 404 Ashford Street where clients to be provided with assistance in all areas of the law during hour long appointments via video conference.
Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan partnered with the McDougall Gauley LLP firm in Saskatoon, as well as a sole practitioner in Saskatoon. In partnership with the Weyburn Community Low Income Centre, lawyers from these firms will be providing the appointments.
The Weyburn Free Legal Clinic will operate twice per month on Friday afternoons, beginning on January 24th, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at 404 Ashford Street.
"We are excited to continue to use technology to expand services to more rural regions of the province, where access to lawyers is more difficult," said Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan Programs Manager & Staff Lawyer Nicole Sarauer. "Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan is an important initiative that brings together members of the legal profession in a coordinated manner to deliver pro bono legal services to low-income residents of Saskatchewan. Lawyers play an important role in ensuring access to justice and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan is evidence of a strong commitment by lawyers to work for the public interest."
Through Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan programs, lawyers volunteer their time and expertise to provide legal services to individuals who are ineligible for Legal Aid but are of limited means and face difficulty affording legal services. There are 320 lawyers in Saskatchewan presently active with Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan programs.
"Pro bono work is a proud tradition of the legal profession and many Saskatchewan lawyers and law students give their time to help those in need access justice," said Sarauer.
Free legal clinics are located throughout the province of Saskatchewan in Regina, Saskatoon, Prince Albert, Swift Current, Estevan, Moose Jaw, North Battleford, La Ronge, Meadow Lake, Yorkton and now Weyburn.
