The snow arrived just in time for snowmobilers on Saturday, Jan. 25, when the Arcola Optimist Club held their 21st annual snowmobile rally.

Registration began at 10 a.m. at the Arcola Prairie Place where 318 riders signed up to participate in a 100km ride through Moose Mountain country. The riders were treated to a pancake breakfast that morning and beverages throughout the day which were sponsored by JJ Trucking. The event itself was greatly aided by sponsorship as there were up 13 event sponsors this year. Other aspects of the event such as cross country, performance and touring saw dozens of sponsors which further supported the Optimist Club's cause.

Chairperson of the rally, Randy James said the event helps the people of Arcola and surrounding communities in a number of ways and pointed to why he joined the club.

"We raise money for the community for various groups and projects. We raise money for the food bank and the rest of it goes to other community projects. Last year we raised about $50,000, we're hoping for somewhere similar this year," he said.

"I'm from the community and I've ridden in this for years and this is my first year as an Optimist and I thought it was a pretty good club to get into."

He said the event has grown over the years indicating that in the early stages of the rally there were about 100 to 150 riders registering.

"Last year was when we had more snow so we got up to 550 riders," he said.

As the snow piled up throughout the day the riders took full advantage, traversing areas that would be cumbersome without an ample downfall of snow. Roars could be heard along Hwy 13 as many could be seen far off in snow-filled prairies, dashing for first place. The event was not only for snowmobile enthusiasts but it also served as a family gathering. Parents and children together, made it an event to get out and have some fun during the winter season.

"This is great, I get to ride, see the countryside, have fun with friends and family, I love it. Plus it's for a worthy cause," one rider said before jetting off on the Moose Mountain trail.

The Arcola Optimist Club is 30 years old and was developed as a way to serve youth in the area and with 41 members, the club has been raising money each year to work on community projects.

The rally ended at 4 p.m. and then prizes were issued. First prize was a choice between ATVs 2014 Arctic Cat ZR 600, 2014 Arctic Cat Mudpro or a 2013 Prowler 700 snowmobile. While second and third place winners received $1,000.

Organizers of the event hope that next year they will receive a record number of participants which they say will continue to help the community.
