March 8 is annually recognized as International Women's Day. An occasion marked by women's groups all over the world to celebrate women's efforts over the years to attain justice and equality for themselves and their children.

Every year thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements. This year's theme is: 'Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures'. With the focus aimed at expanding awareness on the issues that affect girls around the world today.

Some of the issues affecting our young girls and teens today are literacy, dating violence, sexual assault and poverty. With 101 million illiterate youth in the world, more than half being girls, it is important to connect young girls to education. Providing girls with education not only lifts individuals out of poverty, but communities and countries as well.

International Women's Day is a day when women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men.

To celebrate this special day, Envision Counselling and Support Centre will be setting up displays at the libraries in both Weyburn and Estevan. Please stop by one of their display tables and pick up a card to send to a woman who has inspired you. Envision staff will also be presenting roses to the women at Crocus Plains Villa in Weyburn.

Cara Schultz, Envision's Outreach Worker, would like to encourage everyone to take the time on March 8 to recognize the efforts of an important woman in your life.
