Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn held a cake and coffee reception in honour of its volunteers and sponsors on September 27 at the City Centre Mall. The cakes, beverages etc were provided by Co-op. The event celebrates the contributions made by various sponsors throughout the community, as well as providing an opportunity for the members of the community to view information and pictures related to the activities within the organization.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Weyburn has a number of sponsors in the community. Silver sponsors include Nexans, Sasktel, Great Plains Ford, YoungFellows and Western Financial; Investors Group is a Gold level sponsor.

Big Brothers Big Sisters matches carefully-screened adults with children needing more out-of-school, one-on-one adult attention. Children and volunteers can get involved in various programs, each with different levels of time commitment to suit most individuals and their busy schedules. With the traditional Big Brothers and Big Sisters match program, volunteers spend two to five hours per week with a Little Brother or Sister, doing fun things such as cooking, watching movies, playing sports, making crafts, reading etc. With the In-School Mentoring Program, mentors and mentees spend one hour together weekly, on school property, eating their lunch together and then playing in the gym, outside, on the computers or with the activity kits provided by the program. The Big Bunch program takes place a few hours each month, when all kids in the program are invited to get together for that month's activity, craft or event.

Of the 20 children who have signed up for matches, three have been placed with a match, and 17 children are waiting for someone special to take time just for them. Many who are on the waiting list, however, do get to pair up with in-school volunteers. So, even if an adult wishing to be a part of the organization can not commit to a full-on match-up, they can give one hour per week to the in-school program. Anyone wanting to become involved with either program can contact Amy Mohr at 842-4050 or via email at bigbro.sis@sasktel.net or by visiting the 405 Coteau Avenue office.
