The Weyburn Junior High School recently hosted a Talent Show to help raise funds for the Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp. building project.
The grade 8 students took charge of the fundraiser as part of their grade 8 Career Education, Connecting with the Community curriculum outcomes.
Teachers Cory Olson and Karla Warren arranged for the students to take a tour of the non-profit agency's current facility. The students were educated on the services offered for people with intellectual disabilities as well as the various recycling options available. This was an opportunity for them to see first-hand the need for the new facilities and hear the plans for the new project.
The students then raised awareness about the agency with the student body at WJH, and decided to hold a talent show. "We had about a dozen acts. It was a great opportunity for students to get recognition and showcase their talents," said Olson.
The event raised $1,522.67 for Wor-Kin Shop.
"We always welcome the opportunity to work with our schools and educate students about people with disabilities. The excitement the students had for this initiative was very impressive and they put a lot of effort into making it a success", said Andria Brady, executive director.
