For the past eight years, motorcyclists have been raising money for the Breast Cancer Screening program. The annual ride, based out of Regina, has participants from throughout Saskatchewan partake in the event.

Elisa and Allan Jackson from Kisbey, are two of these riders. The couple became involved in the fundraising ride the first year the event took place. Since then, the couple has continued to raise the much needed funds for the program.

Elisa, whose mother passed away from cancer in 2004, feels that the program is a worthy cause. Her mother, who helped raise funds for the program during its first year, was diagnosed with cancer through the screening program. It was shortly after the first ride that Elisa's mother went into the hospital.

The couple became involved in the ride as a result of their membership in the Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.). "One of our friends emailed us about the first ride and when they were holding it. And from there, we decided it was something that we wanted to support." Elisa hopes that the result of events such as these is that they can find a cure for cancer. "I just hope for a cure. Hopefully someday, the need for the [screening] bus will be obsolete."

The ride, which takes participants from Regina to Moose Jaw and back, is a sight for sore eyes for those travelling on the Trans Canada Highway. "We have a city police cop that comes out from Moose Jaw and he leads the ride. The police vehicle is followed by the screening bus which is followed by a group of 10 to 12 survivors. So that is pretty special. And then all of the bikers follow the survivors. Last year, there were about 150 bikes participating in the ride. So in total, there was about 175 to 200 people participate in the ride."

The couple, who have already started raising money for this year's ride to be held Sept 11, have set their fundraising goal at $2,500. Over the past years, the Jacksons have received a number of awards for being the top fundraiser.

Last year, the couple raised $2,150 and in 2009, the total was $2,345.67. Elisa said "We are really trying to raise $2,525.25 this year. We try to have a little fun with it." For those that would like to donate to the cause, they are free to contact Elisa at 462-2150.
