Voters have selected Trevor Knibbs to fill the vacant seat on Estevan city council.

Knibbs earned a lopsided win in tonight's byelection, finishing with 686 votes. That was well ahead of second place finisher Marge Young and her 391 votes.

Stewart Miller placed third with 345 votes, former councillor Lynn Chipley received 330 votes and Waseem Mohammed rounded out the field with 81 votes.

Voters were also asked to give their opinions on the development of a casino in the city and whether or not they would like to see the fluoridation of Estevan's drinking water continue.

There were some strong opinions on both fronts as 1,297 voted no to casino development while just 524 said yes. As for fluoridation, voters were strongly in favour of seeing it continue with 1,147 voting yes compared to the 655 who were against.

Voter turnout in the byelection was very strong with 1,837 people casting a ballot. The evening was also a success for the automated voting system that was used in Estevan for the first time. There were no issues reported with the system and results were available within minutes of the polls closing.
