Literacy-Essential Skills seminar a success

The Literacy-Essential Skills for the Workplace Seminar was held at the lower level of McKenna Hall on September 21.

The Literacy-Essential Skills for the Workplace Seminar was held at the lower level of McKenna Hall on September 21. The purpose of the seminar was to familiarize Weyburn and area employers, employees, and perspective employees with literacy resources. Approximately thirty people attended the seminar.

"Essential skills" are important to the development of all other skills in the workplace. They are portable and can be transferred from one environment to another.

Karen Rosser, Adult Literacy Coordinator at the Saskatchewan Literacy Network, discussed the Essential Skills necessary to meet workplace challenges. The seminar ended with a presentation by Saskatchewan author, Carey Rigby-Wilcox. Rigby-Wilcox discussed how she overcame her own literacy challenges.

The Literacy-Essential Skills for the Workplace Seminar was sponsored by the Weyburn & Area Lifelong Learning Support Literacy (WALLS) group. WALLS members include the Southeast Regional College, Weyburn Public Library, Big Brothers Big Sisters (Weyburn), Great Plains Ford; Regional Kids First; the South East Regional Intersectoral Committee; and Sun Country Health Region.
