The Community Initiatives Fund, which was created with Saskatchewan residents in mind, is intended to help residents build vibrant, resilient and sustainable communities. Under the mandate of the Ministry of Tourism, Parks, Culture and Sport, the fund was created through The Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Act and is governed by eight appointed board members with extensive volunteer experience. The programs are funded through a portion of the profits made by the Regina and Moose Jaw Casinos.

According to the Community Initiatives Fund organization, "Grants through the Community Initiatives Fund primarily enhance community-led projects that benefit children, youth and families. These projects may include childhood development, youth involvement and volunteer engagements. The Community Initiatives Fund could also support projects for increased physical activity or those that contribute to the overall health and well-being of residents."

"Grants may also support small capital projects or events that enhance community pride, celebrate diversity of mark an anniversary. Projects involving youth leadership or Aboriginal inclusion, or those reducing financial or physical barriers to participation, are also eligible."
