Local RCMP assist in homicide

A unit of the Weyburn RCMP was one of many throughout the province that assisted the RCMP Major Crime Unit out of Regina on a homicide case, recently.

Although the investigation is in the early stages, Canora RCMP have arrested one adult male in connection with the homicide of an adult female near the community of Springside, 26 kilometres northwest of Yorkton.

Canora RCMP received a call on the morning of March 12 at approximately 9:30 a.m. requesting police attend a residencenear the community of Springside. The original complaint that came into the RCMP Communications Centre was a report that an adult female had been stabbed.Upon arrival, RCMP members located the body of the victim in the yard of the rural residence. The attack on the victim was witnessed by a third party who reported the incident to the RCMP.

The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Tammey Lynn Kulaway of Springside.

Officers made a patrol of the scene and requested assistance from the RCMP Emergency Response Team (ERT) as there were some indications that the suspect was in his residence and was armed. While the ERT team was en route to the scene, police were able to negotiate with the adult male suspect by phone.There was no standoff and the adult male left the residence upon first contact with members of the RCMP. He was arrested at that time and taken into custody. The residence belongs to the accused, who has been identified as Richard Lesann, aged 43, of Springside.

Lesann was held in custody and attended Yorkton Provincial Court on March 14.

Police continue to investigate at the scene of both the residence and rural property near Springside.

An autopsy for Kulaway is scheduled for early this week in Saskatoon by a forensic pathologist. Cause of death is pending and will not be released by the RCMP.Next of kin notification has been completed by investigators for the family of Kulaway.
