It was another weekend of variety for members of the Estevan Police Service (EPS) beginning on the night of June 15 when they were asked to check into a local vehicle operator's driving credentials since it was believed he did not have a valid driver's licence. The matter remains under investigation.
They also stopped a 22-year-old man and charged him with impaired driving and driving while his blood-alcohol content was over .08 per cent. He was lodged in cells overnight and now has a July 9 court date.
A hit-and-run accident at a local parking lot resulted in a transfer of files to the local Saskatchewan Government Insurance office once it was discovered that the driver of the offending vehicle was not aware that she had caused damage to the complainant's vehicle.
A noise complaint regarding a residence on Nicholson Road was looked into by police on the night of June 15 and the party ended once police arrived so no further policing action was required.
On that same evening, a 45-year-old intoxicated man was found passed out in the central part of the city. It was determined the man was under some additional medical type of distress so he was taken to hospital for observation and treatment before he was transported to police cells for the remainder of the night.
Next, police were called to Spectra Place to assist with the removal of a concert-goer who was causing a disturbance, but it was noted that the person in question had left the venue on his own prior to police arrival.
The next stop was a local convenience store to check into a report of a fight in progress. All possible combatants had left prior to police arrival.
An assault with a weapon was also reported to police on the night of June 15, but the person who was the subject of the complaint left the area before police arrived and could not be located that evening. The file remains open and active.
A domestic disturbance in the central part of the city resulted in the arrest of a 38-year-old woman who was noted to be in breach of a conditional sentence imposed by the court to not consume alcohol during her release period. She remained in police custody pending a court appearance three days later.
A 25-year-old man was arrested on outstanding warrants and for being in breach of a conditional sentence order. He too, remained in custody for three days pending a court appearance.
On June 16, EPS members were alerted to a situation on Valley Street where a caller reported that a three-year-old lost child had been picked up by local residents. En route to the scene, police discovered the mother who was searching for her child, so mother and child were quickly reunited. Police later learned the child had wandered off on a babysitter who had taken him to a local park.
Text messages that qualified as harassment were being investigated by EPS on June 16. They were also asked to look into an assault report that occurred at the local skate park. The early part of their investigation suggests that charges could result.
EPS members on patrol on June 16 were flagged down by a local resident who indicated that an intoxicated man was passed out on the street near Alexandra Avenue and Eva Street. The man was arrested and lodged in cells after being charged for being intoxicated in public.
Two separate incidents at a local cabaret last Saturday resulted in police action being required. The first incident involved a fight between two people which had ended prior to police arrival. The second event involved a 35-year-old man breaking a window in the curling rink. He was lodged in cells until sober and the window damage investigation continues.
Police also note they arrested a 19-year-old woman outside the cabaret after it was discerned that she was the cause of a disturbance with another person. She was lodged in cells and was possibly facing a charge of being intoxicated in public.
A fight on the lawn in front of a residence in the Pleasantdale area led to a call to police on June 16. When police arrived, they were unable to locate anyone, but while on patrol in the area they discovered a female staggering along the street so she was detained for her own safety and transported to hospital for further observation due to her extremely intoxicated state. Her family was contacted by police and the matter was turned over to them and no further police action was required.
On June 17, police were called to a local hotel to attend to a man who was reported to be passed out in the lobby. He was arrested and lodged in cells for the night and was charged with being intoxicated in public.
A vehicle that was being driven in an erratic fashion was reported to police on the night of June 17, but police were unable to locate the offending vehicle.
Another report of a possible impaired driver was forwarded to police that evening. The vehicle had been noted weaving in and out of traffic on the north side of the city. Again, the police were not able to locate the vehicle or driver after arriving in the area.
A false alarm call came to police central offices on the night of June 17. The call had been registered through the provincial 911 system. When police arrived at the address, it was noted that all the people at the address were fine and that the problem was with the telephone.
