On Friday, March 22, grades one through six at Manor School participated in Jump Rope for Heart.

The youth were brought to the gym at 1 p.m. where they were led through stretches before participating in the afternoon of jumping rope.

There were four separate stations set out with approximately four posters up showing different ways to skip rope at each. This resulted in youth trying double Dutch, skipping one rope together, and jumping as high as they can over the rope held by two people at an angle.

In addition to this the youth were placed into four separate groups and awarded points for various parts of competition. This included dressing in their team colour and winning grade skip offs.

The skip offs went through each grade twice. Winners were awarded 25 points to their teams and would participate in a skip off including all of the grades. In the end Micheline Biermann, grade 5, won the skip off where she was able to beat out the other contestants who had reached the final for first.

The team in first was the Crushers with 170 points, which was helped to victory with Biermann's efforts in the skip off. In second place was the Blazers with 155 points, while the Warriors took third with 130 points, and the Chargers came in fourth with 50 points.

Overall the day was a way to get the kids active for an afternoon, while raising money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The promotion of a healthy lifestyle is important and is good to be introduced to youth at an early age.

The youth fundraised $2,707.50 to be donated and were awarded prizes for raising a certain amount. Kyle Bye, Nathan Bye, and Aiza Weir were the top three fundraisers contributing to the final total.

This fundraiser has been going for many years and is greatly enjoyed by youth each year.

Not only does this promote a healthy lifestyle for youth, as statistics show 26% of Canadian youth are overweight or obese, according to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Fundraising for the organization also introduces young people to taking action in order to help others in the future.
