Last year a fire claimed the Arcola Fair and Stampede Board's barn. Rebounding from the loss the Fair Board has decided to erect a multipurpose building in its place.
In order to raise funds for the building a pitchfork fondue was held on June 16, which saw 230 people attend. Merv's Pitchfork Fondue from the Craven area provided the amazing meal that was enjoyed by all.
Music was provided by AC Entertainment.
The silent and live auctions went well. Donations were given by a variety of businesses and individuals from across the southeast that are all in support of the multipurpose building.
A model for the building was present at the event including outlines for planned uses. The intention is to build it in one of two areas at the rodeo grounds. At 4,080 square feet of space it can be used for a variety of functions.
There will be removable seating for 200 people and removable stalls to serve the agricultural industry. With doors 16 feet high and 20 feet wide at either end of the building they will able to hold pull through auctions, shows, and exhibitions.
Planning to work in conjunction with Prairie Place, the new building will hold messier events. Nora Stewart, member of the Fair Board, stated that, "it can be used as an agriculture building. Demonstrations can be done there, such as building straw bale walls, horticulture classes, or even making bricks." The latter being something the town was built on, thus, allowing people to learn about its roots.
Included in the square footage is a lean-to, which will contain various displays on energy sources, agricultural advancements, and Our People. These will celebrate the town's rich history.
"It's all starting to come together. There has been a good response and support from the surrounding area." Al Fletcher, president of the Arcola Fair and Stampede Board, stated.
The auctions, both the live and silent, combined raised just over $13,000. The raffle tickets they had been selling raised $2,600. The group was very pleased with the turnout for the event and the great support they have received from the southeast.
They have $25,000 from the Saskatchewan Gaming Association for a small capital project supporting community initiatives. They also have $28,000 from insurance that the barn was covered for.
Donations continue to be welcomed for the building and the Arcola High School Rodeo, which is scheduled for September. The board is hoping to erect the multipurpose building by this winter.
