Nature Tracks

It was time for the Nature Society's final meeting before breaking for summer. The meeting was held at Knox Presbyterian Church on June 20 at 6:00 p.m. It was a pot luck supper, and everyone enjoyed the company.

Turtles hatching at former Souris Valley grounds This turtle is one of the many that live in the former Souris Valley hospital grounds in the Northwest part of Weyburn. It is best to leave turtles alone. They know how to get back to the river and they do not make good pets.

Turtles use a section of the former Souris Valley grounds for a hatchery, which has happened this year. I would like to remind people that when they spot a turtle at a distance from the river, not to worry, they know how to get back to the river.

When you see a young hatching, it is common to want give them a gentle nudge to the river, but they don't really need help.

Remember, although they are cute, turtles do not make good pets. When you bring them home, they are probably scared half to death and likely will not eat. Don't take them home, because they need to hibernate for the winter.

This has been quite a year so far for butterflies. Several species have been spotted this year including Monarchs, Morning Cloaks, Swallowtails and Red Admirals just to name a few. This would be a nice hobby for the summer just to see how many different species you can find.

Of course our summer birds have returned and Barbers Canadian Geese are doing well as usual. My House Wrens are back in my bird house for the third straight year. What a wonderful and full throated song they have! At my feeder each day, I see several American Goldfinches, Nut Hatches, House Finches and more.

I hope that by this fall to have an email set up as well as a phone number to which residents can report their sightings. I will also keep you informed on my sightings and any special happenings during the summer. I hope you have a wonderful summer and we will begin our meetings again in the fall.

The Weyburn Nature Society is hoping to attract new members in the fall so if you're interested, keep us in mind and I will let you know the time, date and location of our September meeting.
