Cornerstone Family and Youth (CFY) held their annual general meeting at the Carlyle Public Library on Jan. 16 where a new board was selected for 2014.

Over the last couple of months CFY has been in need of people to fill several positions which would help the organization to better service the Carlyle community. The individuals selected have experience in various areas that should benefit CFY and allow for continued growth and improvement in its programs.

Moose Mountain Church of Christ youth pastor Paul Moore was selected as chairperson while Dawn Bain, a local Carlyle parent took the role of Secretary and Treasurer in training. Madeleine Valentine, a member of the Regional Kids First program has the position of treasurer and new board member Odessa Boire, an early childhood educator and parent, joins the team in a general capacity. Another new board member is local RM parent Carmen Aragon, who will also aid in the overall running of the organization. Anita Kehler, a public health nurse with Sun Country Health Region, also rejoins the board for another stint. Jenn Sedor, school age coordinator at CFY, was elated with the selections and shared her delight with the Observer in a recent interview. "This group of people will guide Cornerstone Family and Youth's programming and fundraising initiatives over the next year. Everyone was very excited to be taking part in providing quality children's and family programming throughout the community and area," she said.

"This year CFY will have a strong focus on aligning our program to the ministry of education's "Four Core Components for Family resource Centre's" - Parent Education, Early Learning, Family Wellness and Support, Information and Referrals."

Sedor said one of the major topics of the meeting was fundraising as they focused on the upcoming Family Carnival which is scheduled to be held this June.

"Many ideas are currently in the works as far as food, entertainment and theme for the event," she said.

CFY is local non-profit organization that provides affordable recreation and education opportunities for children the Carlyle area.Their services include safety programs, parenting informational sessions as well as an early childhood centre for families. In addition there are referral services, books for children, afterschool programs and summer camp.
