Pirates of the CUREibean plan Women's Night Out

The Pirates of the CUREibean encourage all residents to attend their second annual All Aboard For A Cure Women's Night Out, at the Weyburn Curling Rink on Friday, May 4.

"We have booked over 50 vendors, who will display an assortment of health products, jewelry, kitchen products, food, clothes and so much more," said Shauna Block, the co-chair of the Pirates of the CUREibean.
Last year, when the group held their first annual All Aboard For A Cure fundraiser, it was a sold out event. They had 37 vendors and a waiting list, and over 500 people through the door, raising $13,000 during the event for the Canadian Breast Cancer Society.

Tickets for this year's fundraiser are available for $15 at the Pharmasave postal desk or the Canadian Tire, both in Weyburn. They are $20 at the door.
The Pirates of the CUREibean team was formed in 2009 to run in the CIBC Run For the Cure events in Regina and Calgary. "We ran as a team with over 40 family and friends, ranging in ages from one to 57 years, running and walking in those events," said Block.

"We originally started our work in honour of a family member - a mother, auntie, grandmother, sister and friend - who at the time was battling breast cancer," added Block. "She's been free and clear of the disease now for two years!"

Then in 2010, the team entered as a "Friends and Family" team and had a new family joined to walk on behalf of their sister, daughter, aunt and friend who was battling breast cancer.

"Sadly she lost her battle to breast cancer in January 2011," said Block. "Now we all walk in honor of this strong, beautiful woman - our ship continues to soar with our sails set high!"

According to Block, experiencing the CIBC Run for a Cure is an amazing event. "Being there to witness all the pink shirts of the cancer survivors, and all the individuals running or walking for a cure for cancer, whether they are young or old, is something everyone needs to experience. There are many different ways to become involved in the run!"

The Pirates of the CUREibean had organized two other fundraisers to bring attention to their fight against breast cancer. During their first year, they had the "You've Been Bra'd" fundraiser, where a sign with bras and pink ribbons was put on an individual's lawn and they had to pay to have it removed or relocated to another lawn.

"We estimate that we've bra'd over 1,500 homes, businesses and oilfield sites in our first year," said Block. During their second year the team's fundraiser was "Bra's and Bouquets", with an estimated 1,000 sold.

"Bras pertain to breasts, so both events were a humorous way to bring attention to those raising money for breast cancer," said Block.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure is Canada's largest single day, volunteer-led fundraising event dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs.

The 22nd annual Run for the Cure for Regina will be held on Sunday, Sept. 30.
