Police confiscate school keys from youths

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of February 27 to March 3: During the reporting period, police dealt with 70 calls for service. Police dealt with two reports of Hit and Run and eight false alarms.

During the reporting period, police dealt with 70 calls for service. Police dealt with two reports of Hit and Run and eight false alarms.

*Police have received complaints of persons parking in Handicap parking spots. Doing so carries a fine of up to $100 so please leave these spots for those who require them.

*Police have been receiving complaints of persons snowmobiling within city limits. There is a bylaw in place that does carry a fine and possible impoundment of the snow machine. The public is being asked to stay on the designated trails in and out of the city. If this in not followed, the City may revoke the privilege of being able to come in for fuel and food on the east and west ends of the city.

*On March 3, police were called to a local establishment to assist in the removal of an unwanted patron, but the person had left before the officers arrived.

*Police were called to an apartment building by a tenant who could hear a lot of yelling coming from one of the apartments. Police attended and spoke to the occupant who was yelling. He was given a warning.

*While on patrol, police were flagged down by a bartender at a local pub. The bartender said that she was just pushed out the door by one of the patrons. The bartender was able to point out the individual and the subject was arrested for being drunk in public and was lodged in cells.

*The Weyburn Police Service was called to assist the Estevan Police Service with a stolen taxi that was leaving Estevan. The chase ended in a collision prior to reaching Weyburn and officers advised eastbound traffic to be cautious.

*Police responded to a call of a male passed out in a washroom at a local pub. The individual had left by the time police arrived.

*Officers responded to a call from Mac's convenience store requesting assistance with a male who had fallen and broken his ankle. EMS was called and officers stayed with the male until EMS arrived.

*On March 2, police were contacted by the Weyburn Court House to execute a Mental Health Warrant. The subject was located and admitted to the Mental Health Hospital without incident.

*A complaint was received of youths skateboarding and drinking beer on Souris Avenue. Police attended and found the youths to be in possession of alcohol, which was seized by police. A $360 ticket was issued for a minor in possession of alcohol.

*SaskPower contacted police regarding having to fix a downed line in a parking lot of a church. Police spoke to the driver of a tractor trailer unit, who had not realized he had damaged the line.

*On March 1, a motor vehicle accident occurred at the intersection of 18th Street and First Avenue Northeast. A westbound truck was struck by a northbound SUV. After hitting the truck, the SUV came to rest against a light standard. No injuries resulted and the driver of the SUV was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for proceeding from a stop sign before it was safe to do so. Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.

*Patrol conducted a traffic stop and found a driver who had been suspended, so the individual was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving while disqualified.

*Tenants of Pennant Manor called police reporting a disturbance in the building and were concerned that it may escalate to violence. Police attended and spoke to the parties involved and were able to resolve the matter.

*On February 29, police were called to an accident on Government Road South. The caller had witnessed a southbound vehicle strike a parked car and then try to drive away. When police arrived, the driver was still on the scene. Major damage was done to both vehicles, resulting in both having to be towed. The driver was charged under the Highway Traffic Act for driving without due care and attention.

*A complaint was received of an erratic driver. The complainant was able to get the license plate number of the vehicle and provided it to the police. The erratic driver was later located and dealt with accordingly.

*Police were contacted about a possible fraud. An individual was selling an item on Kijiji and was sent a money order for $2,300 more than what she was asking for the item. The buyer then wanted the extra $2,300 returned. The item was not given up by the owner and the money order was turned over to police.

*An assault was reported to police in the 100 block of First Avenue Southwest and the matter is still under investigation.

*A call was received from Crescent Point Place, after a Pee Wee hockey game, where parents from both Weyburn and Regina were arguing in the lobby. Police arrived and everyone was sent on their way without any further incident.

*On February 28, a call was received from an employer that had not seen one of his employees in quite some time and was becoming concerned. The employee was located by police and agreed to call his employer.

*Police received a complaint of a stolen Canadian Armed Forces Uniform from a common area at 207 Government Road. The uniform also contained its owner's passport. The matter is still under investigation.

*Police received a report of a stolen land roller. The last time the unit was seen was in June of 2011. The land roller was parked at 58 Sixteenth Street and the replacement cost is estimated at $33,000.

*On February 27, police were called to the Weyburn Comprehensive School when a teacher had reported her school keys as stolen. Investigation found that a group or youths had the keys and would enter at night and use the gymnasium. The youths were suspended from school and an agreement drawn up for the cost of re-keying the locks to be split between those involved.
