Police deal with vandals, thefts and impaired drivers

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of October 14 to 20: During the reporting period, the Weyburn Police Service attended to 86 calls for service. *On October 20, patrolling officers observed three males fighting near a downtown bar.

During the reporting period, the Weyburn Police Service attended to 86 calls for service.

*On October 20, patrolling officers observed three males fighting near a downtown bar. The three males, two of which were 18-years-old and the other 27-years-old, were arrested and subsequently charged under the fighting bylaw and lodged in cells. While being booked into cells the two 18-year-old males were also found to be in possession of small quantities of marijuana and were charged with possession of an illegal substance. The three were released when sober and will be appearing in court in November on their charges.

*Police attended to the former Souris Valley grounds after receiving a complaint that three individuals were lighting fires in the area. The individuals, all young offenders, were subsequently located and charged with mischief and will be making their first court appearance in November.

*On October 19, a mischief complaint was received from a downtown business after a sign was damaged overnight. There are no suspects at this time.

*October 18, police attended to a single vehicle accident on Queen Street, after a vehicle had left the road and ended up in the ditch. The subsequent investigation had determined the male driver had been travelling at a high rate of speed and turned the corner, lost control and ended up in the ditch. The driver was charged with driving without due care and attention.

*October 17, police attended to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 39 and Third Street South. The investigation determined the southbound truck had proceeded through a red light and was struck by an eastbound vehicle. The driver of the truck was charged with failure to obey a red light.

*Police received a call regarding a man seen staggering on the street in the downtown area and then getting into a vehicle. Police attended to the area and located the suspect vehicle a short distance away. The driver showed signs of impairment and was asked to provide a breath sample, which he refused. A 22-year-old male was subsequently charged with impaired driving and refusal to provide a breath sample. He will be appearing in court in November.

*On October 16, police received a theft complaint after a resident noticed that a number of fish had been stolen from a fish pond at a local residence. It appears the theft occurred between October 11 and 15 and there are no suspects at this time. The incident remains under investigation.

*On October 15, a theft report was received after a 26-year-old victim advised the Weyburn Police Service their cell phone was stolen from a local bar.

*A theft report was received from the Weyburn Comprehensive School, after it was determined a number of items were removed from the school between October 2 and 9. Stolen were a PX90 workout DVD set, Xbox 360, a Canon Digital SLR, Android tablet, Sigma lens and a Canon flash. The incident remains under investigation.
