Police make arrest for arson, no further suspects

Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of June 10 to 17: During the reporting period, police responded to 130 calls for service. Police responded to a number of alarm calls and over the weekend they handled a number of noise complaints.

During the reporting period, police responded to 130 calls for service. Police responded to a number of alarm calls and over the weekend they handled a number of noise complaints. Several minor mischiefs done to property and vehicles were reported. There were also a number of alcohol related calls for service, as well as a number of driving suspensions handed out for drinking and driving.

*Police continue to receive a number of calls in relation to aggressive sales tactics by door to door sellers.

*On June 17, at approximately 9:00 p.m., police received a complaint of a camper on fire, situated next to a funeral home on Fourth Street north in Weyburn. The camper was destroyed as well as the garage it was parked beside. There were a number of vehicles that received damage. The value of damage was extensive.

*A second fire was reported that same night at 11:25 p.m. on Birch Drive. A boat, a shed and the garage were damaged as well as its contents, including a vehicle. There was extensive monetary loss to the property owner.

*During the investigation, police arrested a 20-year-old male responsible for setting the fires. He remained in custody until his appearance in court the following morning. These fires along with a number of other fires set a few weeks ago are still under investigation. Police feel all of these fires are related and at this point are not looking for additional suspects.

*On June 16, police attended to an accident on Thirteenth Street, after a vehicle drove through a fence and a garage. The driver of the vehicle left the scene of the accident on foot. The offending vehicle was seized and the operator, who is known to the police, will be located and held accountable for leaving the scene of the accident, as well as for the driving actions.

*Police attended a call of a dispute between individuals. One of the individuals in the conflict would not settle down and had to be subsequently arrested for causing a disturbance. He was taken into custody and was released a short time later.

*Police investigated an unconscious male who was found on the ground outside of a local hotel. The individual, who had been in a fight and knocked unconscious, had subsequently been left on the ground as the other individual left the scene. Witnesses suggested that the fight was consentual but that they did not know the other party involved. The matter is still under investigation.

*On June 15, officers arrived on the scene of a minor accident at the intersection of Sixteeth Street and Highway #39. A vehicle was hit by a semi-truck when both vehicles were making right hand turns. There were no injuries and drivers were directed to exchange information and report to insurance.

*On June 14, police responded to a report of an individual committing an indecent act in his vehicle in a public location. A description of the vehicle and the individual has identified a suspect. The matter is still being investigated but will likely result in criminal charges against the individual.

*On June 13, police received a report of a missing middle-aged man, who had not been seen since June 1, 2012. Police investigated and the man was located in Regina. He indicated that he had been staying with a friend up there since the beginning of June.

*Police responded to a call regarding individuals who had forced their way into a vacant home on South Hill and were sleeping there. The individuals responsible were not identified by the police, but the the property owner was contacted by the authorities to secure the premises.

*Police received a complaint of a missing man who resides in Assiniboia but works in the Weyburn area. The Weyburn Police Service sought the assistance of the media and the public in locating Roland Roberge. Mr Roberge was located in Assiniboia safe and sound. Weyburn Police would like to thank the public as well as the media for their ongoing support.

*Police dealt with a complaint of threats being made between to adult males. One was alleged to have threatened to shoot the other. The matter is still under investigation, but there is a history of conflict between the two individuals.

*On June 12, officers responded to a report of a two vehicle collision on Railway Avenue. Both vehicles were heading east when one of the vehicles failed to stop and rear ended the front vehicle. The occupant of the front vehicle was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment. The operator of the second vehicle will be charged with undue care and attention and/or following too closely.

*Police attended another motor vehicle accident where one vehicle rear ended another vehicle in the Northeast area of Weyburn. The damage was minor, with no injuries reported. The two drivers exchanged information and were directed to report to insurance.

*On June 11, police were requested to assist in locating a child who ran away from home. The child was located a short time later by police and was taken home.

*Officers arrived on the scene of an accident at the intersection of Highway #39 and Highway #13. There were no injuries but vehicles had to be towed from the scene. One driver was charged for leaving the stop sign before safe to do so under the Traffic Safety Act.

*On June 10, police responded to a report of mischief done to a residential yard. On the previous evening, someone had entered the yard and broke a planter, causing approximately $100 worth of damage. The mischief is still under investigation.

*Police attended to a single vehicle accident on private property. The young unlicensed driver had started a vehicle in the driveway, put it into gear and drove through a garage, hitting another shed and causing a substantial amount of damage.

*Police attended a residence after receiving a report of domestic violence between a mother and son. The adult son, in a fit of rage, had caused extensive damage to the home by punching holes in the wall, ripping off doors, breaking furniture and dumping paint on the floor. The 18 year old male was arrested and charged for mischief to the home. He was later released on conditions of no contact with his mother. He will appear in court on July 3 to face the charges of mischief.

*Police investigated a minor accident. While sitting at a stop sign on Moore Street where it intersects with Highway #39, a vehicle was rear ended by a semi-truck bearing Manitoba plates. The accident was reportable as it involved an out of province vehicle. The owners exchanged information and police submitted an accident report to SGI, but the amount of damage was minimal and there were no injuries.
