Police remind residents to lock parked vehicles

During the reporting period, the Weyburn Police Service attended to 115 calls for service.

*On August 19, police received a report of a stolen vehicle, which had been parked in front of the complainant's Northwest residence with the keys in it. The vehicle was recovered a short time later. The subsequent investigation resulted in a 41-year-old male being arrested and charged with theft over $5,000. He will be making his first court appearance on August 21.

*Police were called to the Weyburn Curling Club as a fight was in progress. Police located the two intoxicated males involved in the altercation, separated the parties and gave one a ride home. No charges were laid.

*Police received a call of an armed robbery in progress at the Subway Restaurant on Government Road. A male had entered the store with a knife and demanded money. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. Police attended and observed the suspect fleeing the scene. After a short foot chase and altercation with police, a 41-year-old male was arrested. During the arrest, the accused and a nine-year veteran Constable both sustained minor injuries and were treated in hospital. The 41-year-old accused is charged with armed robbery, possession of weapon, resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. The accused made his first court appearance on August 21.

*On August 17, police were called to Northwest hotel to deal with an extremely intoxicated male who was causing problems. Police located and arrested a 25-year-old male, who was charged for being intoxicated in public. He was lodged in cells until sober.

*Police attended to an alarm at a Northwest business and upon arrival they found that the glass had been smashed out in the front door. The suspect(s) had entered the store and stolen cash, food and a safe containing lottery tickets. A subsequent investigation resulted in the execution of a search warrant on a house in the 700 block Third Street South and the arrest of two individuals. An 18-year-old male and a 21-year-old male were each charged with two counts of breaking and entering and commiting theft, possession of stolen property and wearing a mask in the commission of an offence. Both males were held in custody and appeared in court on August 21.

*Police received a complaint of a telephone fraud. The complainant, a Weyburn resident, received a phone call from an individual who was pretending to be a relative who needed financial help. The complainant sent money orders of an undisclosed amount to this individual only to find out it was not a relative. The incident remains under investigation.

*On August 18, police and EMS attended to the Weyburn Trailer Court to investigate a report of an injured male. A fight between two males had resulted in a 27-year-old male falling into a glass table. He was transported to hospital with non life threatening injuries. This matter was concluded with no criminal charges being laid.

*Police received a complaint of a telephone fraud. The complainant, an elderly Weyburn resident, was contacted by phone and was convinced to supply personal banking information to the caller. This is a common scam technique and the public is reminded not to supply any personal banking information by phone.

*During a routine traffic stop, police smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. As a result of the subsequent investigation, an 18-year-old male was charged with possession of marijuana and will be appearing in court in September.

*August 16, patrolling officers observed a vehicle being driven in a suspicious manner in the area of Highway #39 and Highway #13. The vehicle was stopped and the 22-year-old male driver exhibited signs of impairment. The investigation resulted in a 24-hour suspension and a Highway Traffic Act ticket for driving in violation of a restriction.

*Police received a shoplifting complaint from a downtown business. As a result of the evidence from the business and a subsequent investigation, police identified two individuals who were later located and charged. A 24-year-old female and a 26-year-old female were charged with theft under $5,000 and will be appearing in court in September.

*Police received a call that a black truck was being driven in a manner that would indicate an impaired driver. Police located the truck shortly after and a 36-year-old female was arrested and charged with impaired driving and driving while over .08. The accused was released from custody and will be making her first court appearance in September.

*On August 15, police received a mischief complaint after a parked vehicle in the Northeast part of the city was vandalized. Police have no suspects and the incident remains under investigation.

*On August 14, police attended to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Coteau Avenue and First Street. The accident was caused when the driver of one of the vehicles left the stop sign before it was safe to do so. Damages were minor and no injuries were reported.

*On August 12, police received a report of a stolen motor vehicle. The complainant attended to the Weyburn Police Service and reported that their vehicle had been parked in the area of Foster Street and Bison Avenue and the keys had been left in the vehicle. The vehicle was located later in the week in an alley in the North part of the city. The investigation into this incident continues. The public is reminded to not leave keys or any valuables in their parked vehicles as well as to lock the doors.

*Police received a report of a wallet theft. The complainant advised police that he had his wallet and contents stolen while attending the Red Eye tournament. No suspects.

*Police received a call that a 16-year-old female was in violation of her court release conditions. As a result of the investigation a 16-year-old female was later found and arrested for breach. She was held in custody and attended court on August 14.
