The Weyburn Community Dog Park committee recently reported on the progress being made on the off-leash dog park.

In 2010, the city provided about 2.8 acres of land off Alymer Street and along the Tatagwa trail for an off-leash dog park. The Dog Park committee was busy fundraising for the past year and raised enough funds to erect the fence.

However, with the wet spring and summer rains, work on the park was delayed. Volunteers were busy in October by spending several work days to installing the corner and line posts, and then on Oct. 11 a crew of about 20 volunteers erected the perimeter fencing.

The park will provide separate areas for large and small dogs, as well as a fenced and gated staging area for owners to safely leash and unleash their dogs. Currently only the perimeter fence is up and the Dog Park committee is hoping to have the stage area and the gates installed within the next two weeks.

Although the fence is up, there are still many items required to get the park equipped and ensure safety for dogs and owners, as well as to cover the ongoing operating expenses. They are currently conducting a raffle to raise additional funds.

There are three prizes available, including a handmade dog house, a six-month membership at Olympia Fitness and a meat package from Western Prime Meats. Raffle rickets can be purchased at Cellular Plus in the City Centre Mall, CowTown and the Prairie Animal Health Centre.

The Dog Park committee are in need of more volunteer members to help with the dog park with new and fresh ideas, and welcome residents to attend their monthly meetings. For more information about the off-leash dog park, or to make a donation, please contact Ken Fleming.
Dates for the grand opening will be released at a later date.
