Elizabeth Darveau, a life-long resident of Redvers, has received the 2012 Al McGuire Award for Transition to Independent Living, at SARC's Celebrate Success Awards Banquet on October 16, 2012, in Regina.

Formed in 1992, the Al McGuire Awards honour people with disabilities in areas that help provide full community inclusion like volunteering in the community, enhancing one's life skills, gaining employment and moving into an independent living situation.

Darveau is employed at the 3 Brothers restaurant in Redvers, where she works in the kitchen. By gaining employment, Elizabeth has been able to enjoy the financial capability to move out on her own.

Redvers Activity Centre worked with Elizabeth to help her gain the skills she needed to work on her goal of living independently, but ultimately, it was Elizabeth's dedication and determination that helped her achieve success. Staff at Redvers Activity Centre worked with Darveau in all areas of independent living. She now lives independently in a home that is nicely decorated, clean, and inviting.

The Saskatchewan Association of Rehabilitation Centres (SARC) is pleased to recognize Elizabeth Darveau, and those who have supported her, for defeating the odds and accomplishing the goals she set out to accomplish through practice and dedication.

Each McGuire Award winner receives a $300.00 bursary at the Awards Banquet, and a video vignette is shown. The SARC Awards Banquet celebrates the achievements of individuals with disabilities through four McGuire Awards, as well as an annual Volunteer of Distinction recognition and the Employer of Excellence Awards which honour employers who are champions of hiring people with disabilities.
