The 2011 Canadian Cancer Society's Relay For Life was officially launched in Weyburn on April 27 with a "Launch Lunch" held at Knox Hall for residents, volunteers, and team and committee members. The launch coincided with Daffodil Day - a day which the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) designated to show support for people living with cancer.

During the luncheon, Relay Chair Stefany Hovanak made a call for volunteers.

"Volunteers are the backbone of Relay For Life," said Hovanak. "Volunteer time can be as short as an hour to as long as is needed."

She said that volunteers are needed for registration, luminary sales, set-up and tear-down, and Mission Integration duties.

Hovanak encouraged residents to participate in Relay by joining a team, volunteering, buying a luminary, and signing up for the Survivor's Lap. Registration and more information can be obtained at the local CCS office.

Assistant Event Coordinator for the Southeast Unit of CCS Ashley Fox detailed the success of last year's Relay in Weyburn. She said that in 2010 there were 26 teams, 150 volunteers, and 102 survivors participating. Relay earned $102,059 with 1,373 luminaries sold.

"I am sure this year's Relay For Life will be just as successful," said Fox.
