Weyburn resident George Gillies was recently awarded the Volunteer of the Year Award by the Canadian Diabetes Association. The award honours volunteers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to serve and support people affected by diabetes in their community.

Gillies has been involved for five years as a local pick-up point for CDA's Clothesline Program. He often receives hundreds of boxes and bags of donated items.

His involvement with this program assists in raising money for CDA. The Clothesline Program has contributed to raising over $1.6 million in Saskatchewan during 2009.

Gillies spends countless hours volunteering for the Weyburn branch, and acts as president for the group.
