Review is 'Best Overall Paper', wins six awards

The Weyburn Review was named as the Best Overall Paper in its circulation class, in the Better Newspapers Competition for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, announced at their annual convention held in Saskatoon.



The Weyburn Review was named as the Best Overall Paper in its circulation class, in the Better Newspapers Competition for the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, announced at their annual convention held in Saskatoon.

In the general excellence portion of the awards, the Weyburn Review won all three categories for the Class C circulation category, including Best Front Page, Best Editorial Page and Best Overall Paper.

In their comments on the newspapers, the judges said, "Great local news coverage, nice sharp photos, busy but well-organized layout. Top notch front and editorial page, fantastic attention to sports. Solid photos, advertisements and presentation."

In addition, the Review earned three third-place awards in the Premier Awards category.

The awards included third for Best Hard News photo, by Greg Nikkel, for a photo of the search in the Weyburn landfill for a dead infant's body; third for Columnist of the Year (Greg Nikkel), and third for Best Educational Coverage, for a feature story by Greg Nikkel about retired teacher Gary Cooney.
