So far, Rocanville Community Day plans include a poker rally and a car show.

ROCANVILLE — The Rocanville Community Day Car Show returns for a second year on June 1, running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Currently in the planning stages, more details will be made public soon, but organizers are planning a poker derby to coincide with the event.

The poker derby begins the day prior at the Rocanville Golf Course, then ends on June 1 at the car show.

“It’s a very full day,” said Town Administrator Tanya Strandlund. “It’s going to be fantastic and the car show is just one of the pieces of it.”

One of the first steps was a request before town council to close the 100 block of Ellice Street for the event, which was approved during their April 24 meeting.

Other items approved

Council approved a motion for Jeannot Electric to proceed with the installation of lighting in the library.

“The quote was for $1,459 plus taxes and they’re going to install some LED lights in the library,” Strandlund confirmed.

A curb removal at 110 Pelly Street was approved, which intends to encourage off-street parking.

A pair of mini-split air conditioning units will be installed at the library and playschool with work done by MC Mechanical and Nixon Electric. The work will cost $7,350 plus electrical quote and taxes.

Donation to art project

Council approved a donation request from the Friday Night Live youth group, who are currently working on a public art project.

“They’re a youth group doing a large mural so we’re going give them $50 towards supplies,” Strandlund explained.

Tower replacement

Access Communications would like to upgrade its tower in Rocanville and sought the official go-ahead from council before initiating work on the project.

“They’re proposing a new tower that they have close to the museum,” Strandlund said. “They already have one there, but they’re going to make it a little bigger and a little nicer. They need council approval that they can go ahead with it.”

The request was approved, giving Access the green light to proceed.

Free dump day

If you have a collection of items you’ve been meaning to take down to the dump one day, circle May 11 on your calendar. As with many municipalities, the Town of Rocanville does have a fee structure in place at their transfer station but is planning the Free Dump Day from 11 am to 3 pm on May 11.

“This is a way for people to do a really good clean up and get stuff out of their yard,  the front of their house that they don’t have to pay for,” Strandlund noted. “It cleans up our town quite a bit and helps everybody in town.”
