Salvation Army prepares for busy Christmas season

Renovations to the Salvation Army are almost complete after dealing with flood issues in June, and they are ready for their busy Christmas season.

Renovations to the Salvation Army are almost complete after dealing with flood issues in June, and they are ready for their busy Christmas season.

Volunteers are sought to help sort food that is currently located at the back of the church, and pack it away into the new location for the food bank.

Lieut. Melissa Mailman reported that the upstairs location of the food bank would provide "better access for guests that require assistance, and privacy. We will also have an application office located right by the food bank that guests can access."

For those residents who want to donate non-perishable food to the Salvation Army, there will be a food drive at the Wholesale Club starting on Nov. 15 and it will run into the Christmas season. The Salvation Army will accept turkeys and ham for Christmas hampers and for information contact their office.

The application process for Christmas hampers will occur from Monday, Nov. 14 to Thursday, Nov. 17; and from Monday, Nov. 21 to Thursday, Nov. 24. The times are 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Applicants must supply proof of address, financial information and health care cards.

Once again the Adopt-A-Family program will be undertaken by the Salvation Army. Already businesses and other organizations have signed up for the program, which gives the opportunity to directly affect the quality of Christmas experienced by a family in the community.

The Adopt-A-Family program is completely anonymous, for both applicants and donors. Interested businesses, organizations and individuals can apply by e-mailing weyburn@can.salvationarmy.org. The Salvation Army guarantees confidentiality of all applicants.

During the Christmas season a common sound is the ringing of the Salvation Army kettle bells. Again this year, interested businesses and organizations can "Adopt-A-Kettle" by manning a kettle for the day. While shifts for the Kettle campaign are still being confirmed, they will likely happen from Wednesday to Saturdays. The times will run 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on weekends.

Another Christmas tradition will be the annual Christmas dinner held by the Salvation Army. This year it will be Wednesday, Dec. 21, starting at 6 p.m. at the Captain's Hall.

For more information on any of the programs offered by the Salvation Army, residents are encouraged to contact Lieut. Mike or Melissa Mailman.
