The Carlyle chapter of Students Against Drunk Sriving recently teamed up with SGI for a seatbelt check and barbeque fundraiser in the Fields parking lot.

The Gordon F Kells SADD team, sold burgers and pop in the parking lot to raise money for their future events, and educational speakers/ assemblies.

"Thank you for helping Carlyle become a winner in the 2012 Seat Belt Challege," said the teens. "Remember, buckle up. Your family loves you."

SGI is challenging communities in Saskatchewan to buckle up in an effort to improve seatbelt use.

Two roadside surveys measuring seatbelt usage rates will take place in each participating community conducted by SGI workers. The community in each region with the highest percentage of positive change between surveys will earn up to $50,000 to be used for local road safety improvements.

This year, five communities in the southeast area of the province, six in the southwest and eight northern communities will challenge each other to buckle up. In the southeast, these communities are Carlyle, Carnduff, Coronach, Oxbow, Radville and Redvers.

Roadside activities kicked-off the challenge in each community beginning the end of April and continuing through May. The winners will be announced in late fall.

"Almost all of the communities who have participated in past years have seen an increase in seatbelt usage," Pam Bilusack, Community Relations Coordinator and Traffic Safety Promotion person for SGI said. "The Carlyle SADD team helping out at the seatbelt-check are some of the most motivated I've seen."

The SGI Seatbelt Challenge began in 2008, and has occurred in 39 communities. Past winners have used the prize money for things such as permanent seatbelt signs, pedestrian crossing signs, a cement sidewalk, extra gravel on roads and traffic signs and an LED road sign.

Information can be found in the Road safety section of the website about the Rural seatbelt challenge

The SGI safety crew can be booked for a number of other events, which include town rodeos, holiday events, carnivals as well as any other public happening.
