Stoughton 4-H projects shown at achievement day

After this the members gathered at the north side of the Memorial Hall also on Main Street where the unveiling of a huge wooden message board took place as well as a ribbon cutting for it by the Mayor Bill Knous.

The message board was a 4-H wood working project constructed under the leader's guide Kim Coderre and wood workers David Kernaleguen Charles, Kyle Knibbs, and Liam Hagen. Also helping Kim was former wood worker Nevin Breault.

The 4-H beef members had their achievement day in conjunction with the Estevan Fair. The local competition was held July 6 and the regional competition was held July 8. Results from the Achievement Day:

The Cloverbuds overall champion was Carter Goudy. Jackson Goudy won first place in junior grooming and junior showmanship. Winning first place in intermediate grooming was Dylan Breault. Winning first place in intermediate showmanship was Riley Ingram.

Kayla King won first place in senior grooming, the lightweight steers and had the champion steer. Kayla also had first place in the heifer class, the cow and calf pair and had the champion female. Shelby King won first in the heavyweight steers and had the reserve steer. Shelby also won the reserve female.

The Crossroads Multiple 4-H club won first in Team Grooming. Kayla King won the Aggregate Award and Nevin Breault won the 4-H Motto award.

Sunny skies prevailed for the duration of Stoughton Daze this year, held the weekend of July 5. Stoughton Daze kicked off the evening of July 5 with a nine-hole golf tournament. There were nine teams with four place teams. The low score was 32. Ray Coderre was the best in long drive. Cash prizes were won.

On July 6 the Stoughton firemen held their annual pancake breakfast at the Fire Hall. The parade began on Main Street after touring by the Newhope Pioneer Lodge for the residents to see the floats. There were 32 entries this year.

Winners of the floats were: Best in Classic was the Newhope Pharmacy with a 1946 Fargo truck driven by owner Chelsey Schindel and accompanied by his wife Hazel, in clown costume. Best in Business was the Poplar Tree Inn with a holiday theme decorated flatbed trailer.

Best in Comedy was The Newhope Pioneer Lodge with two decorated wheel chairs and passengers. Best Non-Profit was The Creelman Agriculture Society with a farm theme
The Bed Races were unfortunately cancelled due to lack of registrants. Entertainment by Anthony Bzdell was provided for the children and families by the local library. This was held inside the Memorial Hall.

Also held in the memorial Hall was the local Agricultural Society Exhibits. The Best of Show in Photography was won by Anne Phillips of Stoughton.

Winner of the raffle by the Stoughton Ag. Society will be made at the Fall Agricultural Show on August 15. Tickets are still available for purchase.

The rest of the activities took place at the Fair Grounds where there was the slo-pitch tournament and beer gardens, jumping castles, face painting and popular petting zoo. The gold fish swim had to be cancelled due to chemical problems in the pool water. The food booth was also open on the grounds.

The slo-pitch tournament had 10 teams playing five endings each game. The A side was won by Rory Clark's team The Stoughton Senators. They returned their cash winnings to the Recreation Board. The B side was won by Ocean Man Express and the C side was won by the Arcola Master Batters.

The Griffiths Petting Farm was sponsored by the Stoughton Meat Market and Family Foods. There was a llama, rabbits, goat, pheasants, emus, peacock, guinea pig, hamsters and other animals available for petting.

The local quilting club held an exhibit of 28 quilts for the public to see at the Legion Hall on July 6. Winner of the quilt draw was Lynn Young and the Newhope Auxiliary 50/50 draw was won by Agnes Fraser.

The local New Hope Horse Club had a booth open for breakfast on July 7 and hosted their Gymkhana and Horse Show. Also at the fair grounds were the Red Neck Races.

The winners of the last two draws for the Stoughton Recreation Board Fly Away Draw are: Enid and Leroy Damman of Weyburn for five nights in San Diego California, and Breanne Storlie won the trip for 14 days in the Cook Islands. All of the proceeds from the sale of these tickets (six-trip draws) go to the Stoughton Skating rink.
