Summer reading program at the Yellow Grass library

Yellow Grass (cpd) - Ten children participated in the summer reading program held at the Yellow Grass branch Library on July 13. The books read were "Monkey Puzzle", "Fribbity Ribbit!", "Down by the Cool of the Pool" and "Too Many Books".

The children coloured pictures of a dolphin while being read to by Elizabeth Guest and Andrea Dewing.

Each participant personalized their own CD top, they played a game of hot beach ball and prizes were handed out. Juice and cookies were served and each child received a gift bag. The next session is on July 27 at the town library.

Four members of the Yellow Grass Book Club met recently at the home of Krista Missal. The book "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" was discussed. The club will meet again in the fall to discuss their summer books: "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett and "The Ape House". Anyone interested in joining the book club should contact Krista Missal.

Due to the excessive amount of water in the Estevan area, the Metochos Board and Camp Directors have decided to cancel the Metochos Camp this year. Access to the camp is difficult due to the high water table and saturated grounds. None of the buildings are in danger of flooding or deteriorating. A new facility will be ready for the next camping year and campers will be welcome at that time.

Reverend David Hanes lead the Sunday worship service in the Yellow Grass United Church for the Yellow Grass United Lutheran Partnership congregation on July 10. Leading the Sunday worship services for the next four Sundays are: Joan Klippenstein (July 24); Lorry Steer (July 31); Brian Blaney (Aug. 7); and Joan Klippenstein (Aug. 14).

The monthly Muffin Mania was held on July 11 at the Drop In Centre with 22 people in attendance. Prize winners were Cheryl Watson, Eileen Lansdell, Merle Watson, and Louise Crozier. Proceeds from this event will be divided between ongoing expenses at the centre and the computer program.

The August Muffin Mania is scheduled for the morning of Monday, August 8. Anyone is welcome to attend. A small fee is charged for the muffin and drink. People who can donate one or two dozen muffins should contact the centre by August 6.

Shuffleboard was played at the Drop In Centre on July 8. Winners of the A side were Joan Harder and Eileen Lansdell. The winners of the B side were Lona Wilkinson and Marilyn Lautenslager. A pot luck lunch was served at noon.

Ernie and Elsie Richter celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in Creston, B.C. on June 5. A family gathering was held in Creston from July 1 to 3. Attendees of the celebration included Gail and Rick Murray of Yellow Grass; Dean and Kim Murray with their children Rilyn, Jaden, and Lawson of Yellow Grass; Eric Murray of Yellow Grass; Taryn Moffatt of Weyburn; Lindsay Murray of Westlock, Alta.; Neil and Donette Richter and their children Jessica and Megan of Weyburn; Justin Richter of Weyburn; Krista and Mike Missal and their children Jack and Leo of Yellow Grass; and Gord Richter of Yellow Grass.

The high school grades of the Yellow Grass School will be running their annual magazine subscription campaign this fall as a fundraiser. They would appreciate the community support once more by saving their magazine renewal until that time.

After selling baking all year as a fundraiser, the Grade 5 and 6 class and their teacher, Jane Peters, went to Dallas Valley on June 9 and returned on June 10. The group enjoyed rock climbing, high ropes, canoeing, zip lining, human fooze ball, archery, a campfire, and sleeping in a chuck wagon. Chaperones for the trip were Elaine Neilsen, Don Neilsen, Janet Guest, and one other parent. Janet Guest drove the bus.
Michele Sambrook, a teacher of the Yellow Grass School and a resident of the Avonlea area, received a master's degree in curriculum studies from the University of Saskatchewan. She convocated on June 1.
