An active summer of a youth theatre development program has started at the Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre. Kjel Sidloski has been hired as their summer student to help in the program and to also give tours of the centre.

"I have always been interested in the arts," said Sidloski. "This will be a good opportunity to be engaged in something that I am passionate about."

Sidloski graduated at the Weyburn Comp after going through its music programs, including having a role in this year's musical, "All Shook Up." He also arranges his own music, accompanies himself, and performs at community events.

The youth development theatre will be rehearsing "The Fantasticks" in a unique theatre training program. The goal is to perform the musical from August 3 to 7.

"I am looking forward to the production," said Sidloski. He has been chosen as the youth lead in "The Fantasticks". The play itself is noted as the longest-running musical of all time.

The program started on July 6 and will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The results of the program include growth in self-esteem, confidence building, positive attitudes, self and mutual respect and breakthroughs in dynamic expression.

According to Sidloski, the youth training program will "give people the opportunity to become involved. It will develop their maturity and help them grow as a person."

In addition to helping with the youth training program, Sidloski will give tours of the Tommy Douglas Centre, and will be responsibility for organizing and cataloguing the memorabilia room.

For more information on arranging tours of the Tommy Douglas Performing Arts Centre, or to get involved in the youth development theatre program, residents are encouraged to contact Sidloski or John Nolan at the Arts Centre.
