The Village of Kenosee has hosted a Terry Fox Run each year for the past 32 years. This year 14 adults, 6 youth, and 3 dogs participated some walking, jogging, and running.
The event has been organized by Jackie Doty for the past 12 years. Though the Terry Fox Run isn't technically until this weekend, those at Kenosee walked earlier as some of their schedules conflicted.
It was a beautiful day. The warm sun was out for the participants to enjoy, while a cool breeze made the hot weather more bearable. Together the group raised $1,500, with more donations still coming in for the Terry Fox Foundation.
"We usually have a turnout of 20 to 30 people. Every year we have a few die hards and a few new faces. Everybody has somebody they want to run for," Doty stated.
The Terry Fox Run is a volunteer-led event, which is open to everyone. It relies solely on donations and aims at fundraising for finding a cure for cancer.
"This is a really great organization because 87 percent of funds raised go straight to cancer research. Other organizations may keep a majority for administrative purposes, but with this one most of the funds go directly to the cause," Doty explained.
The participants completed a 5 km trek beginning at Club 19. Working their way down to Marie's Café for water, they continued to the Kenosee Superslides. Turning around they made their way back to Club 19 along the waterside path to the Main Beach where they crossed near Allison's and up the big hill back to the golf course.
This year their walk was dedicated to Doris Campbell and Darla Lucy. Small red hearts were worn by the participants to remember these two beautiful women.
Kennedy will be holding their annual Terry Fox Run on Sept. 16. They will begin at the Kennedy Community Rink. The walk/run will last between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.
