Update: Cleanup from April blizzard begins in Estevan

A blizzard has been pounding Estevan on Wednesday.

ESTEVAN - While the blizzard warning is over for Estevan, there is still a lot of cleanup that remains.

The storm first arrived Tuesday night and the greatest impact came Wednesday. Wellock Road from the cemetery road to Sister Roddy Road and the 900-block of Third Street were closed. 

Notice to Air Missions shut down the Estevan Regional Airport's runways. The runways will reopen at noon on Thursday. 

City hall, the city landfill and the Estevan Leisure Centre also had to shut down. The landfill remained closed on Thursday, while city hall reopened at noon. The leisure centre will reopen Thursday for pre-scheduled rink programming from 4-8 p.m. The Leisure Centre facility will remain closed otherwise. 

Snow removal crews were out at 5 a.m. Wednesday to keep streets open amid the storm. Snow removal crews were out at 4 a.m. Thursday. 

"They are doing an excellent job," the city said in a news release.

There are several streets in the city blocked as of Thursday morning.

"The public is encouraged to stay off the streets until the streets have been cleared and safe for travelling on," the city said. "Several vehicles are stranded on the streets causing blockage; please use caution when travelling on the streets. It is important to drive for the road conditions."

The city assisted St. Joseph's Hospital staff in transporting employees to and from the hospital Thursday morning.

Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency equipment arrived Wednesday night to assist with transporting people in the city if they are stranded. 

All schools for the South East Cornerstone Public School Division are closed Wednesday and Thursday. Schools for the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division were open Wednesday, but will be closed Thursday. The Southeast College's Estevan campus is also closed Thursday. 

Wind conditions have decreased, but more snow is expected throughout the day.
