Both Todd Magotiaux (left) and Mel George were presented with the SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion Award in Carlyle for their great contributions to minor hockey.

On Jan. 19 Carlyle held its Minor Hockey Day in Saskatchewan. Both of the Carlyle Initiation teams played, Arcola travelled to compete against the Carlyle Novice Team, Redvers took on the Atom's, the Carlyle Peewee teams competed against each other, and the final game of the day saw Weyburn take on the Midgets.

All of the teams played hard and did well throughout the day. The crowd cheered on their teams and it was a successful day for Minor Hockey to show its great skill in the area.

As a way to give back to the community each family involved in the day was asked to bring a food item to be donated to the food bank. They were able to gather a substantial amount of dry goods to donate.

"Hopefully it helps them out some," Todd Magotiaux, President of the Minor Hockey Board in Carlyle, explained.

That day also saw two dedicated members of Minor Hockey in Carlyle honoured. Both were nominated for the SaskEnergy Volunteer Champion Award. It is an award dedicated to any individual who has committed themselves to the local community hockey organization.

Typically just one volunteer is honoured, but those associated with hockey in the community contacted SaskEnergy to see if two could be considered this year.

The first to receive the award was Mel George. George was involved as the President of the Minor Hockey Board for a number of years. He was involved in the hockey community for approximately 20 years to which he contributed much of his time to the organization.

Secondly, Todd Magotiaux, was nominated by those in the hockey community unbeknownst to him. As the current President of the Minor Hockey Board and someone who is involved with coaching, it was said that everything they do today wouldn't be possible without him.

Minor Hockey in Carlyle, therefore, was happy to present volunteer awards to both dedicated individuals, past and present.
