Fixin' to feedÂ…. (L-R) Lieutenant Mike Mailman of the Salvation Army accepts 25 turkeys as well as 46 bags of potatoes and carrots from Weyburn Fire Department, represented by Darren Paul, Fire Chief Steve Debienne, Eric Lanktree and Kevin Benning.

As part of its annual Christmas donation campaign, the Weyburn Fire Department Auxiliary members recently donated 25 turkeys, 46 bags of potatoes and 46 bags of carrots for Christmas hampers distributed by the Salvation Army.

When WFD Auxiliary members arrived to drop off the turkeys and vegetables, they discovered that the Salvation Army did not have a place to put the much-welcomed food because all of their working freezers were full and the rest were destroyed during summer floods.

"The right thing to do was to head down the street to New Age Electronics and purchase a couple of upright freezers to be donated to the Weyburn Salvation Army," said Fire Chief Steve Debienne.

So that is what they did. The WFD Auxiliary subsequently donated two upright freezers to the Salvation Army Food Bank.

"The Salvation Army is always there to help the Weyburn Fire Department and any victim of a fire," said Debienne. "They were of great assistance during flood activities in July and always assist firefighters with helping people who have been removed from their homes as a result of fire."

Debienne also said that these types of projects are paid for by dues deducted from brigade members' pay for the year and are not part of the Fire Department's typical charity functions.
