The Weyburn Police Service dealt with 84 calls for service during the week of Dec. 29 to Jan. 5th, 2020.
The Weyburn Police Service, Weyburn Fire Department, Weyburn EMS and Weyburn RCMP were called to a vehicle collision southeast of the City on Highway 39 on Sunday morning. Unfortunately due to the severity of the collision, one of the drivers was found to be deceased. The driver of the other vehicle was transported to hospital in Regina.
It was reported to city police that an individual was observed stealing cable from a compound on the east side of the City on Sunday. WPS members attended and located an individual, who was arrested, charged and will be making a court appearance at a later date.
A vehicle was reported stolen from the south side of the City on Friday. The vehicle was located a short time later in the City and the matter is still under investigation.
Theft of a Christmas projector was reported from a lawn on the south side of the City on Friday. The projector has not been located and the matter is still open.
A report of missing items from a property was received by WPS on Friday, and the report is still under investigation.
A rental property scam was reported on Friday where the scammer was using a rental ad to divert funds from the property owner to the persons running the scam. The ad has been removed from the Internet site and the matter is being looked into.
An assault was reported to the Weyburn police on Dec. 29, and during the report, it was found that an object was used during the assault. The individual responsible was located and charged with assault with a weapon and will be attending court at a later date. The individual was released from custody on a number of conditions.
Weyburn police members were called to a report of a domestic altercation on Dec. 29. Officers arrived at the location and signs of a physical altercation were observed, however one of the parties had left the location. The other individual involved was later located by police, and the individual was charged with assault causing bodily harm, was released on conditions and will be attending court at a later date.
Police were called to an accident on the west side of the City with minor injuries reported on Dec. 29. Neither of the vehicles was drivable, and had to be towed from the location. Road conditions were a contributing factor in the accident.
Members of the city police were called to an apartment complex on Dec. 30 to a report of an individual yelling and banging things around. Police attended and located an intoxicated individual, who was removed from the building for the night without incident.
A call came into the Weyburn police from a motel to assist in removing unwanted tenants on Dec. 30. While WPS members were at the motel and speaking with the individuals, one was found to have a warrant out of Regina. That person was arrested and released for court at a later date in Regina.
Police were called to a report of an erratic driver on the south side of the City on Dec. 31. WPS members located the reported vehicle and observed signs of cannabis use. The driver of the vehicle was asked to perform a Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST), which resulted in a 60-day license suspension and a three-day vehicle impoundment. The passenger of the vehicle was charged with possession of cannabis by a minor.
Weyburn police members were called to a residence to a report of an assault on New Year’s Day. An individual was arrested for assault and transported to the police station, and the person was released on conditions for court at a later date.
An individual turned themselves into the Weyburn police on Jan. 1 after learning there was a warrant for their arrest from the RCMP. The individual was given court documents for a later date.
While on patrol on Jan. 2, city police members came across a parked vehicle on the west side of the City with two individuals inside. Officers noted the smell of marijuana coming from the interior of the vehicle, and the driver was asked to perform a SFST. The driver passed the SFST, however was charged with possessing and consuming cannabis in a vehicle.
Weyburn police received a call of a stolen vehicle from the east side of the City on Friday. The vehicle was located in Regina, where it will be processed for evidence. The matter is still under investigation.
A number of reports came in on Friday of unlocked vehicles being rummaged through, and again city police are reminding citizens to remove valuables or keep them out of sight, to remove the keys and lock the doors.
A traffic stop was made on a vehicle on Friday and the passenger was found to have a warrant from Regina. The warrant was dealt with and the individual was released for court in Regina at a later date. Also during the stop, WPS members found that the driver was under a no-contact condition with the passenger, so the driver was arrested, charged and released for court at a later date.
A trio of vehicles were noticed travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 39 northwest of the City on Friday. Radar found the vehicles to be travelling at speeds of 140 to 143 km/hr, and all three drivers were charged with exceeding the speed limit under the Traffic Safety Act.
A driver was stopped by CTSS on Saturday and asked to perform the mandatory roadside screening. This test resulted in a warning on the device, and the driver was given a 60-day license suspension and a three-day vehicle impoundment in accordance with the driver being under the age of 21 and a new driver.
