Weyburn police received a call regarding a telephone scam involving a Social Insurance Number on Wednesday. Please be advised that you are only required to provide your SIN to the Canada Revenue Agency. As with most of these types of scam calls, please be certain of who you are dealing with and disclosing information to.

Once something like an identification document (SIN, passport, driver’s licence) is disclosed to a scammer, there is no getting that information back and no controlling who has access to it in the future. Future dealings that may include border crossings, financial transactions, credit history can all be affected by stolen identification.

City police received a report of a shoplifter at a downtown business on Saturday. As a result of the investigation, an individual was arrested for theft under $5,000 and for breach of a conditional sentence order. The person was held in custody pending a hearing on the violation of the CSO.

City police received a report of a vehicle in the 400 block of Government Road North being rummaged through on Thursday. As has been the case in recent months, police are seeing a different level of theft from vehicles. It seems that now whether the vehicle is unlocked or locked, if valuables are visible the culprits are willing to break the glass to gain entry and steal the property. The best defence is to simply remove valuables from the vehicle or at the very least place them out of sight.

Weyburn police received a report of a telephone scam on Thursday where the caller alleged that the person owed money for overuse of the data on their cell phone plan. Please be aware of who your plan is with and of the terms of your contract. Please do not provide information to anyone until you verify the call is legitimate.

Weyburn police have received complaints regarding numerous dogs being walked without being controlled by a leash. The police wish to remind everyone that the Dog Bylaw requires all animals outside of their yard or the Off-Leash Park to be on a leash and under control. Having a dog run loose except at the Off-Leash Park is an offence. Please walk your dog responsibly and use a leash. Also the bylaw requires that you clean up after your dog. If your dog defecates while on your walk you are legally required to pick up the excrement.

Weyburn police received a call on March 24 regarding an individual who was in violation of court-ordered release conditions. The person was located and arrested without incident. The person has been charged with breaching the terms of their release and will be making a future court appearance.

While on patrol on Friday, a member of the Weyburn police spotted a person who was wanted on numerous serious criminal charges. The person was arrested without incident. The person was released from custody pending a future court appearance.

The Weyburn police received a complaint on Friday of overdue travelers and the caller fearing for their safety. The travelers eventually showed up at their destination and had decided to take a different route, adding to the time.

Weyburn police received a call regarding a stabbing in progress on Sunday. Upon arrival, the police were able to arrest an individual without incident and without injury to anyone. The matter was not as serious as first called in. The person was released with charges to appear at a future date.

City police received a report of a stolen vehicle on Sunday. The vehicle was subsequently located just outside of Weyburn. The matter is still under investigation.
